Tackling behavioural Issues
Behavioral problems in dogs, such as barking, leash pulling, or jumping, can be frustrating, but positive reinforcement offers effective solutions. At Kelton’s Doggy Trot, I focus on addressing behavioral concerns with the following methods:
1. Reinforce Good Behavior – Focus on reinforcing the behavior you want to see, instead of punishing unwanted behavior. This teaches your dog to make better choices.
2. Redirect – If your dog starts engaging in unwanted behavior, calmly redirect their attention to a more appropriate activity. For example, if they start jumping, ask them to sit and reward that behavior.
3. Use Training as a Tool – Regular training sessions teach your dog to listen and respond to commands, which helps prevent behavioral issues from developing in the first place.
4. Create a Consistent Routine – Dogs thrive on routine. Establishing clear expectations and boundaries helps prevent behavioral problems.
5. Stay Patient and Positive – Change doesn’t happen overnight, so it’s important to remain patient. Celebrate small wins along the way, and don’t give up if progress seems slow.
