5 Essential Positive Reinforcement Training Tips

At Kelton’s Doggy Trot, I’m all about positive reinforcement and helping dogs thrive in a supportive environment. Here are five key tips to get you started on training your dog with positive methods:

1. Timing Is Everything – Always use a reward marker. At Kelton’s Doggy Trot, I use the word “yes” or a clicker. Reward immediately after your dog performs the desired behavior. This helps them associate the reward marker with the behavior, followed by a reward, reinforcing good behavior.

2. Start with High-Value Rewards – In the beginning stages of training, use rewards such as treats or toys that your dog finds irresistible to motivate them. As your dog becomes more consistent, you can switch to lower-value rewards or praise.

3. Be Consistent – Consistency in commands and rewards is crucial. The more consistent you are, the quicker your dog will learn.

4. Keep Sessions Short and Fun – Dogs, especially puppies, have limited attention spans. Focus on practicing each skill in 5-10 minute intervals to maintain their engagement and make learning enjoyable.

5. End on a Positive Note – Always wrap up training sessions with success. Whether it’s a simple sit or a fun game, finishing on a positive note boosts your dog’s confidence.
